While observing the two shop technicians replacing four wheels onto the hubs of my fifth wheel trailer I noticed they were tightening the lug nuts in a sequential circular manner and not in the star pattern required by the manufacturer. At first when I brought it to their attention they told me they were tightening them correctly when in fact they weren’t. I saw them do it. Both technicians made excuses and continued installing the bolts sequentially instead of tightening them in the required star pattern. Then they both started arguing with me even though I tried to explain the star pattern tightening procedure. They chose not to acknowledge the correct way of installing and then tightening the lug nuts and used a pneumatic impact wrench to install the nuts in a circular pattern. I asked the supervisor to take them off the project and finish tightening the nuts himself. I now have to loosen the lug nuts on each of the four wheels and retighten them correctly to confirm the wheels are not torqued out of round.

Their attitude and behavior when I asked them about it and brought the correct procedure to their attention was rude, arrogant, argumentative and obnoxious.

Their Supervisor was friendly and accommodating so there’s that bright spot in all of this.

The owner was very helpful in finding the correct brake caliper I needed and went out of his way to get it to the shop so the work could be done. I appreciate that.

It’s unfortunate the two technicians were so argumentative and unwilling to acknowledge what needed to be done and just do it.
